This was my second project for my sophomore year sculpture class. For this project, we had to create a head covering out of wire, using different mediums to cover the wire. I am known for having a vast knowledge of pop culture, and a lot of my knowledge is from 80s pop culture, so I wanted to show that through this project. For the actual head covering, I created a brain helmet, from which different parts of 80s pop culture would burst out from. The brain was made from wire covered in tracing paper. Then, to give it the pink, lobed look, I covered the paper with chewed bubblegum. Bursting from my brain, I attached a Nintendo Entertainment System controller, a Rubik’s Cube, and a television displaying the MTV Logo. These were made with wire covered in a mixture of tracing paper, printed paper, and electrical tape. To stabilize the helmet, I attached it to the Madonna cone bra, which was also wire covered in tracing paper. Finally, I held a boombox, made of wire covered in tracing paper, to evoke the image from the 1989 John Cusack movie, Say Anything.
