This was my first project for my sophomore year sculpture class. I wanted to create a faux-antique coffee crate because I find antique crates visually interesting, and I wanted to see if I could replicate the look. To start out, I took old wooden shipping palates and reused the wood for my crate. Then, using hand tools only, I cut the pieces to size and nailed them together, using wood glue for extra strength. Next, I created the Mitchell’s Damn Fine Coffee logo, and made a stencil out of it. I chose the name in a nod to one of my favorite TV shows, Twin Peaks. After spray painting the logo onto the box, I had to make the wood look aged. To give the wood that old, worn look, I brewed 2 gallons of coffee and stained the wood with them.
