During the Autumn semester of my sophomore year at Ohio State, I had long blocks of classes 4 days a week. The breaks in-between my classes were so short that I often did not have time to eat lunch. That was, until the day I discovered a hot dog stand on campus that accepted the meal plan. From that point forward, I ate lunch at that hot dog stand 4 days a week. One day, I was eating my lunch, when I noticed the interesting pattern that the dropping mustard made on the wrapper. I thought that multiple wrappers arranged in a quilt-like pattern would make for a beautiful piece. Thus, I set forth to eat many hot dogs.
For this piece, I ate a hot dog four days a week for four weeks. To keep myself from getting too compositional with the piece, I put the wrappers in order of when I ate them. So, the top row are the hot dogs I ate during the first week, then the next week is the second row, and so forth. To get a nice smear (and to make sure that the condiments were not too heavy to dry out) I would use the hot dog to pick up fallen condiments. At the end of the four weeks, I attached the wrappers in a grid-like pattern using rubber cement. As seen in the picture above, I chose to display this piece on a table, as if it were a tablecloth.
