This was my final project for my sophomore year sculpture class. For this project, I wanted to explore what the end of World 1-1, from Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, would look like in three dimensions. I decided on the final screen of the first world in the game because it is a very familiar image and since it was the end of the side-scrolling level, it was always the same. To make my vision a reality, I created a 2″ base with a 1/2″ backboard. Then, I used more 1/2″ boards to create the castle. I carved blocks of wood to make the flag pole’s top and bottom, then used wooden dowels for the flagpole and to make the cloud look like it is floating. Once I had the wooden negative, I used paint and permanent markers to give it the familiar, 8-bit coloring of the game.
